Dr. Idris S. Stovall, a Pittsburgh native, is the first African-American to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Massachusetts, Ahmerst. Idris received a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Massachusetts in 1999 and graduated cum laude from Hampton University with a B.A. in mathematics in 1993. He attended Schenley High School before moving to Jersey City, N.J., where he graduated from Academic High School. Idris is the son of Donna Stovall of Capital Heights, Md., and John and Pamela Stovall of Burtonsville, Md. Upon earning his degree, Dr. Stovall spent a year as a post-doctoral research assistant at Florida State University. In 2002, he became an Instructor at the University of Pennsylvania.
