Simmie Blakney from 1954-55 he was an Instructor at Utica Junior College (Miss.). In 1955-1956 he was Assistant Professor and Chair of the Mathematics Department at Grambling College. From 1956 to his retirement he was Professor of the Mathematics Department at the University of Toledo. In 1956 at the University of Toledo, he became the first African American to chair the mathematics department of a non-HBCU. In 1990, he retired from the University of Toledo.
